Today’s Devotional: “Swallowed”

Have you ever wondered what happens when you swallow food? Let me share with you what I found.

The stomach churns the food by contracting and relaxing and begins to break it up. This allows the stomach enzymes to work faster on the food. The stomach also releases gastric juices into the food that activates hydrochloric acid that helps to break down the proteins into amino acids.

Everything is then crushed into a green liquid called chyme that is then forced into the small intestines for digestion.

Now doesn’t that make you want something to eat?

Now consider Jonah’s plight.

“Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” (Jonah 1:17)

Jonah was in this state for three days. Three days! Makes you wonder what he was doing. He surely wasn’t praying, because in the very next verse it says, “Then Jonah prayed.” When? Three days into the digestion cycle of being worked upon by the fish’s enzymes and gastric juices.

Jonah was having is his own pity party. Jonah was feeling not just alone, but he was feeling like he had been rejected by God and tossed into the belly of hell itself. He says in his prayer “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried.” (Jonah 2:2b)

When we wallow in our problems and sorrows it feels the same way, it feels like we’ve been swallowed and are being digested by our grief.

The way out however is through God. It was when Jonah prayed that God delivered Him.

One more thing, it says that God prepared the fish to swallow Jonah. In other words, God already knew and made arrangements to help Jonah repent and fulfill His calling upon his life.

When we’re going through these rough times, we need to pray and find out what God may be doing through this whole process.
