Remaining Available for God’s Anointing

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Remaining Available for God’s Anointing”

God’s ability to fulfill His promises in us and through us is totally dependent upon our remaining open and available.

This is the widow’s lesson.

A widow of a prophet came to Elisha telling him a creditor was about to take her sons as payment of a past debt. To repay this debt, Elisha told her to gather as many jars as she could from wherever she could. Then, with her one jar of oil she was to pour its contents into all these other jars, and there would be no lack of oil.

When she got to the last jar, and there were no more available, the oil stopped.

“When all the jars were full, she said to her son, ‘Bring me another one.’ But he replied, ‘There is not a jar left.’ Then the oil stopped flowing.” (2 Kings 4:6)

What got my attention wasn’t necessarily the miracle, nor that God supernaturally supplied for the needs of this widow and her sons. What caught my attention was that when the availability of jars to hold the oil stopped, so did the oil.

Oil in God’s word is often symbolic of the Holy Spirit. Jesus connected the two without controversy when He quoted the prophet Isaiah saying that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him and has anointed Him (Luke 4:18; Isaiah 61:1).

We are those earthen jars as the Apostle Paul points out (2 Corinthians 4:6), and God pours into us the oil of the Holy Spirit. And it is only when we are open and available will the oil of anointing continue to flow. But when we are no longer open and available for use, then the oil will stop.

When we stop becoming available for God to use, when we become full of worldly things and ourselves, then the anointing oil of God’s Spirit will no longer flows into our lives, and we no longer be a continuous blessing to those around us.
