Pass the Salt

Today’s 333 Devotional: “Pass the Salt”

Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” (Matthew 5:13)

Jesus is saying the same thing to the church today as He was to the disciples. He is calling us to be salt to a tasteless and decaying world.

Salt is not only a flavoring agent, but it’s also a preservative to keep foods from going bad. This is what we are to be to the world around us. We have to flavor the lost people’s pallets with the gospel message of Jesus Christ, and we are to liberally spread the gospel message to a world to stop it from decaying any further.

But it begins with us. Instead of passing the salt on to others, we’ve passed up the salt for the church and for ourselves. In essence we’ve lost the flavor of the gospel message and are decaying, trampling the good news of Jesus Christ underfoot and under the guise of spirituality.

Leonard Revenhill said, “The Church right now has more fashion than passion, is more pathetic than prophetic, is more superficial than supernatural.”

The church doesn’t need more electronics; it needs to be more electrifying. It doesn’t need more programs, it need more of God’s presence. In fact, it needs fewer gimmicks and more of God’s word.

We need to fast and pray and ask for the empowering presence of the Holy Spirit in much the same way as He gave the Holy Spirit to the first church to purify our hearts by faith.

“Let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.” (Hosea 6:1)

Know that before God judges the nation, He’ll judge the church.

“For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God.” (1 Peter 4:17)
