Today’s 333 Devotional: “Hope Springs Eternal”

Pulling out a quad pad of paper to do some writing I saw these words written on the top, “Hope Springs Eternal.” Obviously the Lord meant something to be written, but for whatever reason I left them.

I wondered how many of us leave the promises of God because we’ve lost hope because of circumstances or situation.

But hope springs eternal. There’s always hope. When things seem like they are hopeless, it’s in hope we’re to trust.

Abraham was the classic example of someone with no hope for the future.

Family was big in those days, both literally and figuratively speaking. Having sons and daughters showed prosperity and God’s blessings, but Abraham had neither, and that’s because his wife, Sarah, was barren.

But listen to Abraham’s testimony, “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations.” (Romans 4:18)

What did it mean, “Against all hope?” Well, not only was Sarah barren, she was also past her prime and her ability to have kids. At this time she was 90 years old.

So Abraham could have easily fallen into despair and depression. He would have no one to carry on his name or his legacy. But Abraham knew where his hope lay, and in Who his hope was in.

So instead of turning to wine to numb his lost hope, he turned to the Lord and remembered the promises given, that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in heaven and the sand on the seashore (Genesis 22:17).

Abraham’s hope was in God, and in God he believed and continued to live life to the fullest, giving his frustrations and fears over to the Lord, knowing that God’s thoughts and plans for his life was of peace and not of evil, to give to him a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
