Today’s 333 Devotional: “Faith’s Testing Ground”
Growing up in Las Vegas, Nevada, I was familiar with the Nuclear Test Site. It was also known as the Nevada Proving Grounds. Here they would conduct nuclear weapons testing, first above ground, and then below ground. And I remember the shaking that occurred when these were detonated.
In much the same way, God has a testing and proving ground for faith. But it isn’t in any geographical location; rather it’s in within our hearts, where the God’s word is to be obeyed.
Proverbs 17:3 says, “The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the hearts.”
Moses said in Deuteronomy 8:2, “Remember that the Lord your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.”
What Moses reveals is that God’s testing ground for faith lies within our hearts, and the way God tests our hearts is though obedience to His word, the Bible.
Later in Deuteronomy 13:1-4, it says that anyone who calls themselves a believer, or more specifically a prophet, that is, someone who teaches and preaches the word of God, and they say something, or tells us to do something that goes directly against God’s word, that the Lord God is testing us to see what is on our hearts, that is, whether or not we will obey God or the false prophet.
The Psalmist said that is how God tested Joseph saying, “Until the time that his word came to pass, the word of the Lord tested him.” (Psalm 105:19)
And what we see from this example is that while God’s word tested Joseph, it meant going through a time of affliction.
And so, going back to our verse in Proverbs, we see that God tests our heart through His word, and this happens through the furnace of affliction as brought out in Isaiah 48:10.
