Today’s 333 Devotional: Our Need For God’s Presence

After the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, two disciples were traveling to the village of Emmaus. While on their way they were discussing the events of the past week, which concluded with several women saying Jesus had risen from the dead and was alive.

As they were pondering the significance of these events, a man came along side and walked with them. Seeing their obvious distress He asked them why they simply didn’t believe. He then went on and shared that what happened was nothing less than fulfilled prophecy.

When they stopped for the night the man broke the bread and the disciple’s eyes were opened and they saw that this man was no one less than the risen Jesus.

We are all on this same Emmaus road trying to figure out what’s happening in life. We started out thinking life was going to play out a certain way only to find that things change and we really don’t know what to make of it.

We need God’s presence to come along side and help us to sort through the various twists, turns, and detours that occur in life. This is God’s promise to those who believe.

Jesus said, “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you … when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:7, 13).

This word “Helper” means “One called alongside to help.” What a comfort knowing the Holy Spirit will come along side and take this journey with us speaking to us directly from God’s word as to what we need to do to live effective lives.

Let’s open up our hearts and allow the Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us as we travel through this life into eternal life in heaven.
