The Bill Comes Due

“So Saul died for his trespass which he committed against the Lord, because of the word of the Lord which he did not keep; and also because he asked counsel of a medium, making inquiry of it, and did not inquire of the Lord. Therefore He killed him and turned the kingdom to David the son of Jesse.” (1 Chronicles 10:13-14)

1 Chronicles 10 describes King Saul’s death along with the reason why. Saul died for His trespasses by not keeping God’s word, and particularly at the end when Saul went to a medium to seek guidance (1 Samuel 28:7-8).

In the Hebrew is says that Saul made the inquiry from someone with a “familiar spirit,” which is described in our passage as “it.” Paul said we don’t fight against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12).

What our passage describes is that one day our transgressions will become due. The Bible calls it “Judgment Day.”

The Bible says, “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.” (Hebrews 9:27)

“We will all stand before the judgment seat of God … So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:10b, 12)

Further, no one is without sin and righteous enough to stand before a holy and righteous God (Psalm 143:2).

“As it is written: ‘There is none righteous, no, not one’ … for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God … For the wages of sin is death.” (Romans 3:10, 23; 6:23a)

But there is hope in all of this, as Paul goes on to say, “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23b)

Of Jesus Paul said, “Who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification.” (Romans 4:25)

Therefore, since Jesus paid the bill, we can live fully assured of our eternal reward in heaven.
