What Doing Right Provides
When we do right by others, then we’ll be a refuge and shelter for them from the storm. This is what the prophet Isaiah brings out.
“See, a king will reign in righteousness and rulers will rule with justice. Each man will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and the shadow of a great rock in a thirsty land” (Isaiah 32:1-2).
Of the Lord God, Isaiah said, “For You have been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shade from the heat” (Isaiah 25:4a).
Later Isaiah prophesied of the Messiah’s coming saying, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound” (Isaiah 61:1).
As Christians we’re called upon to live like Jesus who calmed storms, brought comfort to the needy, and streams of living water to parched and dried souls.
The world and its evil both zaps and drains the energy right out of us. And while we search for answers through politics, philosophies, education, science, and religion, in the end they come out empty, providing no hope, no refuge, and absolutely nothing that will nourish and satisfy the longing of the human soul.
“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ” (Colossians 2:8).
So where do we turn in these times? We turn to the Lord through faith in Jesus Christ. We then become His ambassadors, and as His ambassadors we need to do what is right just as Jesus, and when we do we’ll become a shelter and a refuge of safety.
