It Isn’t All About You
Many have the wrong spirit when they come to church. They come to church wanting to receive without any obligation to give. People come expecting to be served and to receive something for their life, but they’re never willing to give unto others in return.
But this is not how God meant church to be.
These same people then leave the church disappointed because they didn’t get what they wanted or thought they deserved, and that’s because they didn’t understand that it’s not about them, rather it’s about God and serving Him through serving others.
Isn’t this the heart of the Great Commandment?
“‘And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Mark 12:30-31 NKJV)
Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God with the whole of our being, with the whole of who we are, and the way we show and live out this love for God is by loving others and serving them in His name.
To love God is to extend to our service to others, not waiting to be served by them!
Chuck Smith said, “When you minister unto others, the Lord ministers unto you even more.”
This was the Apostle Paul’s take when he wrote to the Roman Church.
“Without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers, making request if, by some means, now at last I may find a way in the will of God to come to you. For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift, so that you may be established–that is, that I may be encouraged together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.” (Romans 1:9b-12 NKJV)
Church is about loving God and serving Him through serving others.
